Court Awards Damages Because Defendant's Website Not Accessible by the Blind
This was a class action case in the United States between a major online retailer and the National Federation of the Blind in which the major retailer settled for an amount thought to be up to $6m because its website was too difficult to use with screen-reader software, which converts content to speech, allowing the blind use the Internet.
It underscores the importance of considering and complying with disability laws in setting up a company’s website and not treating the disabled less favorably than others.
